Decision Lab has been sponsoring a school for the Lunches 4 Learning program! The program focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty in rural Honduras by providing healthy lunch to elementary school children every school day at their school. This allows children to stay in school so they can complete at least the sixth grade and enter the workforce as literate individuals.
Lunches 4 Learning operates in the Valle Province. This Province is the poorest with 70% of the people living below the poverty line making two dollars or less a day. The government does not supply buildings, water, sanitation or school supplies to the schools in Nacaome. Many students walk three or more miles to attend school. They do this willingly because they are so eager to learn. However, 20-30% of children eventually drop out of school to search for food for themselves and their family before finishing the elementary grades.
Studies have shown that if a child receives a 6th grade education they become literate and have a decent grasp of different math skills. Then, they have a much better chance of getting a job and living above the poverty level.
-$15 to feed a student for the month
-$150 to feed a student for the year (school year is February to November)
Today, Lunches 4 Learning supplies 80% of a day’s calories/nutritional needs for the students at 30 schools, equaling about 1800 students.
Decision Lab has been a sponsor of this program since December 2016. We are thrilled to be a part of such a great program that allows children to receive the education they deserve!
